My sister and I were caregivers for our mother and father who had dementia/Alzheimer’s and mobility issues. They lived at home and at an assisted living facility. The challenges varied day-to-day. I found myself constantly overcoming many problems in dealing with the failing health of my parents. Maintaining a safe and comfortable environment was the priority, but was also the daily challenge to achieve those objectives. It was draining emotionally and physically, but became rewarding later as quality time was well spent with them.
First, the overwhelming demand on my time was not anticipated. Time management is crucial in maintaining ones mental and physical health during a care giving period.
Secondly, additional family support is vital.
And lastly, seek out support agencies to assist with the needed services or equipment to better care for your loved one.
Embrace the opportunity to care for your loved ones and cherish the small moments you will create. What will seem like drudgery, will in time become the last precious moments you will have of those you love the most and make the best of every minute, it does go fast and you will wish you had the time back.
